Let’s be honest. Scouting is one of the most important parts of coaching — and also one of the biggest time sucks.

You watch film. You scribble notes. You try to break down tendencies, matchups, rotations… and then you start second-guessing if you missed something.

This year, I started using AI to help — and it didn’t just save me time. It made my reports sharper, more focused, and actually easier to share with my players.

Why Scouting Takes So Long

Most scouting reports take hours because we do them piece by piece:- Watch the same clip five times- Pause and rewind to count rotations- Write down every action, then try to connect it to a strategy. It adds up — and it burns time we could be spending prepping or coaching.

That’s where AI comes in.

How I Use AI to Build Scouting Reports

Here’s my process:

1. Upload film notes or stats — you can even paste in a Google Doc or image.

2. Add details about the opponent — what I’ve seen, how they play, my past notes

.3. Describe where my team is at — so the advice fits us, not a generic gameplan.

Then I use a prompt to ask for a scouting summary:- Offensive tendencies- Defensive weaknesses- Key matchups or rotations to watch- Suggestions on how to attack and adjust, and it gives me something that’s 80% ready to go — sometimes better than what I’d write from scratch.

What Makes It Work

It doesn’t guess. It reacts to your input.

If you give it vague info, it gives you vague output. But if you’re specific — it gives you something clean, detailed, and game-ready.

I’ve even used it to create a player version of the AI scoutIng report — simplified wording so my girls don’t get lost in coaching lingo.
