This season, I used AI to do something I’ve never done before as a coach — I used AI game strategy in my sport to break down a team I had already lost to. Late in the year, with the season on the line, I turned to AI not for a miracle, but for a second set of eyes. What I got was better than expected.
The Situation
We had played this team earlier in the season and lost. I wanted to make sure that if we saw them again, I’d be more prepared. I uploaded a photo of our game breakdown stats. I copy-pasted stats from our spreadsheet. I gave AI our current team situation — injuries, confidence level, playing time trends — and I fed in my scouting report on the opponent.
What I Got Back
It didn’t just spit out random advice. It confirmed a lot of what I was already thinking — which honestly gave me confidence. But it also gave me:- New drills to work on with our team- A few defensive reminders that aligned with our philosophy- Suggestions for attacking a few specific matchups- Mental prep tips to help our girls feel like they could win as underdogs
Why It Worked
AI didn’t replace my strategy. It backed it up. It felt like having a coaching assistant who wasn’t afraid to validate what I was thinking or show me something I missed. That’s what made this so powerful — it didn’t just tell me something new, it helped me coach with more clarity.
